"My first pro gig was playing in the ship's band on the Portsmouth-Bilbao mini-cruise. This lasted for two seasons... Whilst onboard I accepted an offer from a professional Flamenco act in London who needed a second guitartist. As well as a load of corporate work, we also had a regular spot in Covent Garden performing to overseas visitors. It didn't cover the cost of living in London - to make ends meet I busked in Charing Cross tube... This I would rush to from Covent Garden, sometimes still dressed in full traditional Spanish costume! I'd get some really weird looks from commuters as they made their way home... Someone once gave me a 50 quid note - It was real!" |
